A14 Ruins Lives

Please Leave Your Comments

The reason we have named this web site "A14 Ruins Lives" is because that's exactly what it does. It ruins the lives of drivers accused of creating accidents, takes lives and ruins the lives of families on both sides.

...who in turn are ALL victimes of the A14.

This entails all users of the A14 - lorries, cars, coaches, everyone.

Have you ever been involved in an accident or had a near miss on the A14 in the Cambridge area? Have you personally witnessed a potential accident?

At peak times this road is hazardous and until this road can be made safe it must be recognised that it is lethal.

Please write your comments and let everyone know that this web page exists. No need to leave your personal details, just your name.

This web page has been created to try and help us as a family as the A14 has now ruined our lives.

Yesterday (29/6/10) - at 3.15 A.M. another accident on the A14 at Huntingdon close to Spittals. I, like many others I'm sure, was horrified to see on the local news bulletins the picture of a lorry hanging over the side of the road. Whether it was driver error or not, this incident resulted in a queue going back 14 miles to the M11 and closed the road until 2p.m. As I write, the scheme for improvements is currently suspended - Government cuts. I have written to the Secretary of State for Transport. Within my letter is an invitation to the Right Honourable M.P. to visit the area, and for him to experience the A14 and all that goes with it. After all, seeing is believing. I don't expect to receive a reply......

I have to use the A14 every day and whilst i totally agree with the need for an extra lane, the majority of the accidents and tailbacks are due to poor driving. Tailgating is one of the main problems, the car tailgating keeps braking, the next one has to brake, then the following one etc until the road is at a stand still.

Adding a third lane will just encourage people to sit in the second and third lane when they are not overtaking causing more tailbacks, drivers are ruining lives, not a piece of concrete.

The A14 is really busy at times, and I think a new lane would be a good idea. It carries about ten times the amount of traffic it was originally designed to. I wonder if it needs to be a motorway, but that would take years and involve a lot of money. Some of the juctions are poorly designed, and are far too short (Rougham is a good example).

But we can't blame a road for the way people drive. And I believe this is what causes 99% of accidents. people tailgate, pull out without looking, speed ridiculously, talk on their phones, eat their lunch etc. It's people's driving we need to change, not the inanimate road itself. Drivers need to take responsibility for the way they drive, driving is a privilege not a right. I urge all drivers to concentrate, keep your distance and think. It's time to end the madness please!!

Me and my friends were driving along when an idiot pulled out straight into us but luckily none of us were hurt, but we all had to chip in for the cost of the car which was a hefty price.I agree with Karl there should be a New Lane.

According to the roadside sign on the A14 Eastbound near Girton we killed more than four times as many people on the A14 in Cambridgeshire alone during 2008 (222) than the total number of British people who died in Afghanistan from all causes in the same year (51).

Unfortunately I have to use part of the A14 daily to get to work in Cambridge and am constantly amazed at the appalling standard of driving ! Why do people think it's clever to overtake the queue to the Histon interchange in the fast lane and then push in at the last minute. It makes it impossible to leave a safe braking distance - as soon as a gap opens up someone from the outside lane is pushing into it ! Something needs to be done urgently to improve this stretch of road before more lives are lost - or ruined by the consequences of an accident !!

The A14 was intended as a major link in the trunk route from the Midlands to Felixtowe and hence Europe. It has been achieved by linking up a hotch potch of pre-existing roads which originally served other purposes and the resultant interchanges have been poorly thought out, with confused priorities that overlook the original object. The result is that we have a trunk route that is unfit for purpose and with interchanges that are dangerous because of quite inadequate traffic control. Nobody likes speed limits, so-called safety cameras etc but they have their place, for safety, if the layout of existing roadways creates danger. The safety of the Queen's Highway is the responsibility of the relevant Highway Authority. The A14 is a national highway and therefore the Government's responsibility, no doubt delegated down the line somehow. If the roadway continues to be dangerous, and nothing effecive is done to control traffic, the Government is negligent. Pathetic, sad little signs advertising how many lives a
highway has claimed are not a safety measure, they merely try to put the onus on the wretched users of the highway and surely amount to no more than an admission of negligence by the authority. Traffic controls would inevitably slow down the flow and inrease journey times and this in turn would highlight the inadequacy and unfitness for purpose of the route as a whole. No doubt such exposure would be politically damaging but without these measures death and misery will continue to be wreaked on innocent citizens until, many years hence, we get a new road
